Best Places to Catch Yellowfin Tuna

Offshore fishing for big game marlin.

Yellowfin tuna are fast, powerful, and excellent to eat, and they are found in warm and temperate oceans around the world. Some places are known for consistent action, others for very large fish. Here are some of the most popular yellowfin destinations. Seasons and runs vary, so always check recent local reports.

Louisiana and the northern Gulf of Mexico

The oil and gas platforms off Louisiana, especially out of Venice, are famous for yellowfin. The rigs hold bait and draw tuna much of the year. Crews troll, chunk, and fish live bait around the platforms.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

Hatteras and Oregon Inlet are known for yellowfin when the Gulf Stream and cooler shelf water meet. Many anglers target them in late fall through spring, with fish often caught trolling along temperature breaks.

Northeast canyons

The canyons from Virginia to Massachusetts hold yellowfin in summer and fall. Trips are long, but canyon edges can be loaded with tuna, often mixed with bigeye and mahi.

Baja California and the Mexican Pacific

Southern California long-range boats and Baja ports see yellowfin in summer and fall, including some very large fish around offshore banks and islands.

Panama and Central America

Panama's Pacific coast is known for big yellowfin, often caught around offshore islands and seamounts.

Other notable areas

  • Hawaii, where yellowfin are called ahi
  • The Bahamas and Caribbean in spring
  • Florida's Gulf coast offshore rigs and deep water

Trolling tips for yellowfin

  • Troll 6.5 to 8.5 knots with medium resin lures, bullets, and spreader bars.
  • Fish temperature breaks, color changes, and bait marks.
  • Be on the grounds at first light when fish are often near the surface.
