Wahoo and mahi are two of the most common targets offshore, and both respond strongly to flash. Abalone resin lures combine natural shell iridescence with a durable head, making them a good fit for both species, as long as you rig and run them correctly.
Abalone lures for wahoo
- Style: bullet or streamlined heads that track straight at speed.
- Speed: 10 to 16 knots for most abalone bullets; heavier lures can go faster.
- Colors: dark abalone patterns, purple and black, and blue abalone are reliable.
- Rigging: wire leaders are a must. See how to rig wahoo lures with wire.
Abalone lures for mahi
- Style: small to medium resin heads with lively action.
- Speed: 6 to 9 knots.
- Colors: green and yellow abalone, pink, and bright blue stand out near weed lines.
- Rigging: mono or fluorocarbon leaders of 60 to 100 lb.
Running both in one spread
When targeting mahi and wahoo together, run abalone lures on the riggers for mahi at standard speed, with wire on at least one or two lines in case wahoo show up. Bullets on wire in the long positions cover both.
Weed lines
Weed lines hold both species. Compact abalone bullets shed weed better than large skirted lures. See how to fish weed lines offshore.
Why flash matters
Both wahoo and mahi hunt fast-moving prey. A flash of light can trigger an instant reaction strike, especially in clear water.
