How to Fish Weed Lines Offshore

Marlin chasing an offshore trolling lure

Floating weed lines are some of the most productive structure offshore. Sargassum and debris shelter small baitfish, which attract mahi, and mahi attract wahoo, tuna, and billfish. A good weed line can turn a slow day into a great one. The trick is finding the right lines and trolling them without fouling every lure.

What makes a good weed line

  • A defined, continuous line rather than scattered patches. Lines form where currents meet.
  • Healthy, golden weed often holds more life than old, brown weed.
  • Signs of life: small baitfish, flying fish, birds, and color or temperature changes nearby.
  • Debris: boards, buoys, and logs along a weed line can hold even more fish.

Which side to troll

Troll along the edge of the weed line rather than through it. Many crews prefer the side with cleaner, bluer water. Run the spread parallel to the line so outside lures stay in clean water while inside lures work close to the edge.

Lure choice

  • Weed-shedding lures: compact heads with smooth resin finishes shed weed better. Our Blackfin Bullet was designed to cut through sargassum.
  • Bright colors: green, yellow, and pink stand out against the weed and are mahi favorites.
  • Smaller sizes match the bait hiding under the weed.

Dealing with weed on lures

Check lures often. A lure dragging a clump of weed will not get bit. Run fewer lines when weed is heavy, and pull lures in to clear them regularly. A short, sharp tug on the line sometimes shakes weed loose.

Working debris

When you find floating debris, troll around it in a circle, staying close without running over it. Mahi often hold tight to debris, and wahoo may patrol just outside. If you hook a mahi, keep it in the water to hold the school. See how to keep a mahi school at the boat.

Using turns

Weed lines are perfect for turns. Troll one side, turn wide, and come back the other way, letting the spread swing through productive water. See using turns to trigger strikes.

Birds

Frigate birds circling over a weed line often mark mahi below. See our guide to reading birds offshore.
