When to Respool Your Trolling Reels

High-quality offshore trolling lures.

Line is the cheapest part of your tackle and the easiest to neglect. Old or damaged line breaks under pressure, often on the biggest fish of the season. Knowing when to respool keeps you from losing fish to something entirely preventable.

Signs your mono topshot needs replacing

  • Nicks, abrasions, or flat spots you can feel when running the line through your fingers
  • Chalky, faded, or stiff line from sun exposure
  • Coils and memory that will not relax
  • Stretched line after a long, hard fight

Signs your braid needs attention

  • Fraying or fuzzy sections
  • Faded color, especially near the top of the spool
  • Digging into lower wraps after a hard run

Braid lasts much longer than mono and is often kept for several seasons, while the mono topshot is changed more frequently.

How often to respool

  • Mono topshot: replace it regularly, at least once a season for most anglers and more often if you fish a lot.
  • After a big fish: check the full topshot and replace it if it was under heavy load for a long time.
  • After a near spool: if a fish took most of your line, inspect the deep wraps and connection too.
  • Braid backing: inspect each season; replace when worn.

Spooling tips

  1. Spool under firm, consistent tension so line packs tightly.
  2. Lay line evenly across the spool.
  3. Leave a small gap at the top of the spool.
  4. Test the braid-to-mono connection before fishing.

Flip or cut back

Some anglers cut back a few yards of topshot after each trip to remove the most worn section near the leader, then replace the topshot entirely when it gets too short.

Store line properly

Keep reels and spare spools out of sunlight and heat. UV exposure is one of the biggest causes of mono breakdown.
