Trolling Leader Length Guide

Angler assembling trolling lure rig on dock

Leader length affects how a lure swims, how visible your rig is, and how easily you can handle a fish at the boat. There is no single correct length, but there are proven starting points for each species and style of fishing.

Typical leader lengths

Target Material Typical length
Blue marlin Heavy mono (200 to 400 lb) 15 to 30 feet
White marlin, sailfish Mono or fluorocarbon (60 to 130 lb) 10 to 15 feet
Yellowfin and bigeye tuna Fluorocarbon (100 to 250 lb) 10 to 20 feet
Wahoo Wire, sometimes with a mono section 6 to 15 feet
Mahi and blackfin Mono or fluorocarbon (60 to 100 lb) 8 to 12 feet

These are common ranges. Adjust based on your crew, your boat, and local practice.

Longer vs shorter leaders

  • Longer leaders keep the main line farther from the lure, protect against rough skin and tails, and give the wireman more to grab.
  • Shorter leaders are easier to handle, store, and cast, and may let smaller lures swim more freely.

Mono, fluorocarbon or wire

Mono is tough, affordable, and has some stretch. Fluorocarbon is more abrasion resistant and less visible, which helps with line-shy tuna. Wire is a must for wahoo. See how to rig wahoo lures with wire.

IGFA leader rules

If you are fishing for a record or in a tournament that follows IGFA rules, leader length is limited. Under IGFA rules, for line classes up to 10 kg (20 lb), the leader may be up to 15 feet, with a combined double line and leader of up to 20 feet. For heavier line classes, the leader may be up to 30 feet, with a combined length of up to 40 feet. Always check the current rules before an event.

Swivels and connections

Connect the leader to the main line with a quality ball-bearing swivel or wind-on connection. Make sure the connection passes smoothly through rod guides if you plan to wind it onto the reel.

Inspect often

Check leaders for nicks and wear after every fish. See when to replace trolling leaders.
