Walking into an offshore tackle shop for the first time can be overwhelming. Walls of lures in every size and color, and every one promises to catch fish. The good news is that a small, well-chosen kit covers most offshore trolling situations. Here is where to start.
The core spread: five lures
- One large lure (12 to 15 inches) for the short corner. A loud resin head that smokes and draws fish in.
- Two medium lures (7 to 10 inches) for the corners and riggers. These are your workhorses for tuna, mahi, and white marlin.
- One small lure (5 to 7 inches) for when fish are on small bait.
- One straight-running bullet for the shotgun or long rigger and for wahoo.
Colors to start with
- Blue and white: a classic for clear water
- Green and yellow: mahi and green water
- Purple and black: low light and wahoo
- Pink: overcast days and a strong all-around color

Rigged or lure only?
If you are just getting started, buying lures pre-rigged ensures hooks and leaders are set up correctly. See pre-rigged vs DIY trolling lures.
Add-ons as you grow
- A second set of colors for variety
- Wire-rigged high-speed lures for wahoo
- A teaser or daisy chain to raise fish
- Spare skirts. See our trolling skirts set.
Do not forget the basics
Lures are only part of the kit. Make sure you also have ball-bearing swivels, spare leaders, a gaff, gloves, and a lure bag. Our pre-trip tackle checklist covers it all.
