How to Gaff Wahoo Safely

handsome guy holding a fish

Wahoo are one of the most dangerous fish to bring aboard. They have rows of razor-sharp teeth, thrash violently, and often make one last burst at the boat. A smooth, confident gaff shot and a plan for getting the fish into the box keep the crew safe and the fish on.

Gear

  • Gaff: a stout gaff with a 3- to 4-inch hook works for most wahoo. Keep the point sharp.
  • Gloves: for whoever handles the leader.
  • Fish box or bag ready and open before the fish arrives.
  • Fish bat to calm the fish quickly.

Before the gaff

Do not rush. A green wahoo at the boat can make a sudden run. Let the angler tire the fish until it comes alongside and stays relatively calm. The driver keeps the boat moving slowly forward so the fish stays beside the boat, not under it.

Where to gaff

Aim for the shoulder area behind the head or the upper back, which gives solid control. Avoid the belly, where the gaff may tear free. Bring the gaff over the fish's back and pull up and in with one smooth motion.

Getting it aboard

  1. Lift the fish over the gunwale in one motion and directly into the fish box or bag if possible.
  2. Keep the head pointed away from people.
  3. Close the lid or subdue the fish quickly.

Staying safe

  • Never put hands near the mouth of a wahoo, even one that looks dead.
  • Watch for hooks still in the lure as the fish thrashes.
  • Keep the deck clear of people not involved in the gaff.
  • Use pliers or a dehooker to remove the hook only once the fish is calm.

Common mistakes

  • Gaffing too early on a green fish
  • Swinging wildly and hitting the leader
  • Leaving the fish thrashing on an open deck
